Whether a vehicle is new or used, a careful inspection before you commit is the best protection against surprises. When you buy from China, the first inspection usually happens before shipping, carried out by an inspector who sends you photos, videos and a written report. The second happens at handover, when you see the vehicle in person. This checklist works for both.
Documents and identity
- The vehicle identification number (VIN) on the vehicle matches the invoice and export documents
- The model, version, year and colour match what you agreed to buy
- The mileage is consistent with the vehicle's age and its documents
- For a used vehicle, the seller can share its service and accident history
Body and exterior
- Paint colour and finish are even across all panels; differences can be a sign of repairs
- Gaps between panels are even, and the doors, bonnet and boot open and close smoothly
- There are no dents, deep scratches or rust, including underneath the vehicle
- Glass, mirrors and all exterior lights are undamaged and working
- Tyres have even wear and enough tread, and the spare wheel or repair kit is included
Interior and electronics
- Seats, seat belts, trim and floor coverings are clean and undamaged
- The air conditioning cools properly
- Windows, door locks, mirrors, wipers and the horn all work
- The screen, cameras and parking sensors work, and the menus can be set to English
- No warning lights stay on after the vehicle starts
Battery and charging (electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles)
- A diagnostic check shows the battery's state of health, which matters most for a used vehicle
- The vehicle charges normally with the cable and connector you plan to use
- The range shown at full charge is reasonable for the model
- The diagnostic check shows no battery or drive-system fault codes
Engine and underbody (petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles)
- The engine starts easily and idles smoothly, without unusual noise or smoke
- There are no oil, coolant or fuel leaks underneath
- Gear changes are smooth
Test drive
- The vehicle drives straight with the steering wheel centred
- The brakes feel firm and stop the vehicle without pulling to one side
- The suspension is quiet over bumps, without knocks or rattles
- There are no unusual noises or vibrations at higher speeds
The inspection report
If you cannot see the vehicle in person before it leaves China, ask for a written inspection report with recent photos and videos covering the points above. Keep a copy. At handover you can compare the vehicle with the report and raise any differences straight away.
At handover
- Walk around the vehicle again and compare it with the inspection report
- Check that all keys, the owner's manual, charging cables and accessories are included
- Confirm which documents you receive now and which are still being prepared for registration
- Ask for a walkthrough of the main features, the charging equipment and the warranty terms
How Yantuicar helps
Yantuicar's parent group uses a structured inspection process covering more than 120 items before vehicles leave China. Ask the team in Addis Ababa about any vehicle in the inventory and they will share the inspection information on file.
